On 20th July 2024, Starlight School in Bakau, The Gambia, celebrated a significant milestone, marking its 10th anniversary with a vibrant graduation ceremony for 14 outstanding students. This event not only celebrated academic achievements but also highlighted the school’s role in transforming the community.
A Day of Celebration and Reflection
The graduation ceremony was a joyous occasion, filled with pride and community spirit. Mr Lamin Gibba, the event’s master of ceremonies, led the proceedings, which were attended by a distinguished lineup of guests. Among them were Mrs Saihou S K Jagne, Principal Education Officer from the Education Directorate – Region 1, Mr Lamin Dibba, Bakau Councillor, and Ms Stephanie Gomez, National Nursery School Coordinator. Their presence underscored the importance of education and the school’s impact over the past decade.
Councillor Lamin Dibba took the opportunity to commend the Oasis Project and Starlight School for their transformative work in the community, particularly noting the success of the Canal Project clean-up. This initiative has not only improved the local environment but also fostered a sense of collective responsibility among the residents.
Ms Stephanie Gomez delivered a compelling speech on the importance of child protection, emphasising the role of educators and community members in safeguarding the welfare of children. Her words resonated deeply with the audience, reinforcing the school’s commitment to creating a safe and nurturing environment for its students.

Pastor Gideon Adeoye, a key figure in the Oasis Project, shared the inspiring journey of both the project and the school, highlighting the challenges overcome and the successes achieved. The guest speaker, Mrs Deborah Adeoye, delivered a heartfelt address, encouraging the graduates to embrace their future with confidence and a sense of responsibility. She spoke passionately about the importance of nurturing potential and fostering a culture of hard work and perseverance. The Tallingding Scout Band added to the festive atmosphere, filling the venue with music and joy.
